Mary Leonard, Ph.D.
(Annapolis Office)
Mary Leonard, Ph.D., was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota, moved to Maryland to work at the University of Maryland, College Park as a staff psychologist in the Counseling Center and assistant professor in the Counseling and Personnel Services program. She was promoted to associate professor, served on college and university wide committees and initiated a university wide study on campus climate of students. Her work in the Counseling Center including counseling undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff in crises, short and long term therapy. She has over a hundred conference presentations and fifteen articles and book chapters, the latest, “ Can Women Have It All?” in Women and Happiness, fall, 2009

After 16 years at the university, she left to open her own psychotherapy private practice. During this time she sought out additional training in hypnosis, EMDR, work with trauma survivors, adults with learning disorders, couples in conflict and the elderly.

She now enjoys her work at Spectrum Behavioral Health and working with a wide range of people with recurrent or new difficulties, and all of life’s challenges. Although primarily cognitive–behavioral in approach, she pulls from many traditions within psychotherapy with an emphasis on people’s strengths and positive psychology. She is goal oriented, and believes in behavior change by helping client’s focus on their thoughts and feelings, reflect on their actions and try out new behaviors that can lead to greater productivity and happiness. She looks forward to meeting new clients and enjoys working with her current ones.
