Announcements
Spectrum Behavioral Health proudly announces the newest member of our team; Akira Otani, Ed.D., A.B.P.H. Dr. Otani joins Spectrum, having recently been with the Counseling Center at the University of Maryland, College Park. Having spent his childhood in Osaka, Japan, he is fluent in both the English and Japanese languages. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Psychological Hypnosis. We are very proud to introduce him as a qualified member to our outstanding team and excited to welcome him in both offices. He is available to accept new patients immediately.

L. Dean Hoover, MD, was born and raised in the Palm Beaches of Florida. From the University of Miami he received two Bachelor degrees: a BA in Philosophy and a BS in Chemistry. A Medical Doctor degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine was conferred in 1975. Thereafter, he served as a U.S. Navy Medical Officer for eight years.

The National Board of Medical Examiners certified him in 1976. He completed a Rotating Internship at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, and a three year Psychiatry Residency at the Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1980 Dr. Hoover became a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry. He was Head of the Mental Health Unit at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis and taught psychology to the Midshipmen. His last duty station was at the National Naval Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, where, as Chief of the Psychiatry Consultation Service, he trained Medical Students, Psychology Interns, and Psychiatry Residents.

Dr. Hoover was an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine. Since 1983 he has been in the private practice of the medical specialty of Psychiatry in the Annapolis area. Between 1994 and 1997 Dr. Hoover was Chief of the Psychiatry/Psychology Service at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He is now a member of the Medical Center's Emeritus Medical Staff.

Dr. Hoover has been active in the Anne Arundel County and Maryland State Medical Societies. Many times he has been voted a "Top Doc" by his medical peers in Greater Annapolis. He has particular expertise in psychopharmacology, cognitive behavioral therapeutic techniques, vagal nerve stimulation treatment, and hypnosis. The treatments of adults with depressive illness, anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychosomatic disorders are his specialties.

When away from Spectrum Behavioral Health, he enjoys spending as much time as possible with his wife and their two cats, sailing, snorkeling, traveling, reading, learning about ancient history, and rooting for the University of Miami Hurricane football team!
