| L. Dean Hoover,
MD, was born and raised in the Palm Beaches
of Florida. From the University of Miami he
received two Bachelor degrees: a BA in Philosophy
and a BS in Chemistry. A Medical Doctor degree
from the University of Miami School of Medicine
was conferred in 1975. Thereafter, he served
as a U.S. Navy Medical Officer for eight years.
The National Board of Medical Examiners certified
him in 1976. He completed a Rotating Internship
at the Naval Regional Medical Center
in Philadelphia, PA, and a three year
Psychiatry Residency at the
Naval Regional Medical Center in Portsmouth,
Virginia. In 1980 Dr. Hoover became a Diplomate
of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
in Psychiatry. He was Head of the Mental
Health Unit at the United States Naval Academy
in Annapolis and taught psychology to the Midshipmen.
His last duty station was at the National Naval
Medical Center, Bethesda, Maryland, where, as
Chief of the Psychiatry Consultation
Service, he trained Medical Students,
Psychology Interns, and Psychiatry Residents.
Dr. Hoover was an Assistant Clinical Professor
of Psychiatry at the Uniformed Services University
of the Health Sciences School of Medicine. Since
1983 he has been in the private practice of
the medical specialty of Psychiatry in the Annapolis
area. Between 1994 and 1997 Dr. Hoover was Chief
of the Psychiatry/Psychology Service
at Anne Arundel Medical Center. He is now a
member of the Medical Center's Emeritus
Medical Staff.
Dr. Hoover has been active in the Anne Arundel
County and Maryland State Medical Societies.
Many times he has been voted a "Top
Doc" by his medical peers in Greater
Annapolis. He has particular expertise in psychopharmacology,
cognitive behavioral therapeutic techniques,
vagal nerve stimulation treatment, and hypnosis.
The treatments of adults with depressive illness,
anxiety disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder, bipolar disorder, and psychosomatic
disorders are his specialties.
When away from Spectrum Behavioral
Health, he enjoys spending as much
time as possible with his wife and their two
cats, sailing, snorkeling, traveling, reading,
learning about ancient history, and rooting
for the University of Miami Hurricane football
team!
