ADHD
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most
common childhood behavior disorders. While always beginning in childhood, ADHD
often becomes a lifelong affliction. Typically, a child with ADHD will display
behaviors related to inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Some children
exhibit primarily inattentive types of behaviors (ADHD: Inattentive Subtype)
while others exhibit primarily Hyperactive and Impulsive types of behaviors
(ADHD: Hyperactive-Impulsive Subtype).
Children may also exhibit significant
levels of both Inattentive symptoms and Hyperactive-Impulsive symptoms (ADHD:
Combined Subtype). Often, treatment for children with ADHD involves a
combination of behavioral interventions with pharmacological interventions.
Positive behavior supports focus on providing incentives for appropriate
behaviors rather than providing punishment for undesirable behaviors. Providing
positive behavioral supports as well as a consistent, structured environment are
very important in long term management of ADHD symptoms.
